One of the most famous sights in the world, the belltower is adjacent to the Cathedral in the City of Pisa. Begun in 1174 by Bonanno Pisano, the tower's construction was halted when it reached the third story since the tower had started sinking into the ground. After a lapse of 90 years, construction resumed and it was completed. The belfry was added in the 14th century. Formerly open to tourists, who could climb 294 steps to the top, the tower is presently closed to visitors while engineers consider various methods of stabilizing the tower to keep it from leaning any farther.
