
This photo shows a bridge that is along the main waterfront in Venice. In back of the bridge, on the left side, is the Ducal Palace. On the right side is the New Prison. In the background can be seen the Bridge of Sighs. This bridge is located near St. Mark's Square, one of the most famous sights in Venice. Landmarks of the Square include St. Mark's Cathedral, a basilica which was consecrated in 1094 but had mosaics and art works added until the mid-1500's; the Campanile (bell tower); and a famous clock tower. Several Popes, including Pope John XXIII, had been the Cardinal Patriarch (Archbishop) of Venice before being chosen as Pope.
