Sculpted by Michelangelo between 1513 and 1516, the statue of Moses is the centerpiece of the tomb of Pope Julius II. Located in Rome in the church of St. Peter in Chains, the tomb was originally intended to be located in Saint Peter's Basilica. However, the death of Julius II in 1513 left Michelangelo without a financial patron and the planned tomb, which was to have about 40 statues on it, was never finished.
