The Pieta

Located above an altar in a side chapel inside St. Peter's Basilica, this statue of the sorrowing Blessed Mother holding the dead body of Christ was sculpted by Michelangelo in 1499-1500 when he was only 22 years old. It is the only statue "signed" by Michelangelo. Damaged by a vandal in the 1970's, the statue has been restored and is now protected by a pane of bullet-proof glass.
