View of Santa Chiara

Located in the old part of Assisi, the church of Santa Chiara was built in 1257-1265 and is dedicated to St. Clare, one of the followers of St. Francis of Assisi. St. Clare founded the Poor Clares, an order of cloistered nuns. The church contains the body of St. Clare and also the crucifix that spoke to St. Francis and led him to his pious life. St. Clare died in 1253 and her feast day is celebrated on August 11th.
