St. Bernadette Soubirous

9photo01

This is a close-up photo of the incorrupt body of St. Bernadette. It lies in a gold and glass coffin in the Chapel of St. Bernadette in Nevers, France. Born in 1844, Bernadette suffered from asthma as a child. She entered the Sisters of Nevers at the age of 22 and spent the remainder of her life at the motherhouse in Nevers, which is a short distance from Lourdes. St. Bernadette died in 1879 of tuberculosis of the bone and complications. Her body was first exhumed in 1909, thirty years after her death, and was found incorrupt. After the sisters in the motherhouse reclothed the body with a new religious habit (the one in which she had been buried was damp and disintegrating), St. Bernadette's body was again buried. Her body was exhumed a second time in 1919 and found to be still incorrupt. Following this exhumation, the body was placed in its present gold and glass coffin where it may be seen in Nevers.
