This photo shows a famous Moscow landmark, St. Basil's Cathedral, lit at night. This cathedral was begun in the 1550's by the Tsar Ivan IV (Ivan the Terrible) to commemorate his victory over the Mongols at Kazan in 1552. It took over a century to complete the church. During the invasion of Russia by Napoleon in 1812, French cavalry used the cathedral as a stable for their horses. It underwent major restorations in 1839 and again in the 1950's after being damaged during World War II. The colorful onion domes that cap individual chapels inside the cathedral give it its distinctive appearance.
