Crutches

7photo14

This photo shows some of the crutches left behind at St. Joseph's Oratory by pilgrims who have been healed of their maladies. Called the "Miracle Worker of Montreal", many miraculous cures were attributed to the intercession of Blessed Brother Andre, who was devoted to Saint Joseph. Born as Alfred Bessette in a small town southeast of Montreal, Alfred was the sixth of ten children. By age 12, both his parents had died -- his father in a lumbering accident and his mother of tuberculosis. In 1870, he joined the Congregation of the Holy Cross and took the name Brother Andre.
