The Pantheon

7photo04

This photo shows the front of the Pantheon, the oldest church in Rome. This church, originally a Roman temple dedicated to all the pagan gods (pan Theon), was designed and built by the Emperor Hadrian in 120 A.D. over an earlier pagan temple built in 27 B.C. It is a remarkable architectural feat. Until 1960, its dome was the largest in the world. The interior unity of perspective is achieved through the dome's diameter being the same as the height of its walls. The bronze entrance doors are original. At the direction of Pope Boniface IV, the formerly pagan temple was made into a Catholic church in 609 A.D. and was named St. Mary of the Martyrs because a large quantity of relics of the martyrs had been brought to the chapel from the catacombs. The tomb of the artist Raphael, who died in 1520, is inside.
