A view of the remains of the synagogue in the town of Capernaum. While Christ taught in the synagogue at Capernaum (Mk. 1:21), and the synagogue was likely the one built by the centurion (Lk. 7), these ruins are from a synagogue built in the 3rd or 4th century A.D. that was one of the most elegant white limestone synagogues in Israel. Excavations have found that this synagogue was built on the remains of an older synagogue made of basalt. It was in the vicinity of Capernaum that Jesus gave the crowd His discourse on the Eucharist (Jn 6:32-67), which was "a hard saying" and caused many of His disciples to leave Him. It is also the time when Judas' eventual betrayal is first mentioned.
