This photo shows the front of St. Bartholomew's Church in Cana. Cana was the site of the first recorded miracle worked by Jesus, in which he changed water into wine at a wedding feast. A Franciscan church, St. Bartholomew's is believed to be built over the site where the wedding feast was held. This is because the church crypt, which is open to tourists, is built around a well and a large, scooped-out rock that seems to have been used for ceremonial washing. The present church was built over the ruins of a Byzantine building that may have been a church or synagogue. St. Bartholomew, named Nathaniel in Hebrew, was a native of Cana.
